Psoriasis is a long-lasting chronic skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin that are covered with a silvery coloured scale. The patches are most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, however they can appear anywhere on the body.
The severity of the condition varies from person to person; some people may only be affected with small patches that are just a minor irritation. Others can have the condition impact their quality of life, with the patches becoming itchy or sore.
As the condition is a chronic disease there can be periods when you have no symptoms or mild symptoms, this can be followed by periods where symptoms are more severe.
What causes psoriasis?
Skin cells are normally produced and replaced every three to four weeks; however people with psoriasis have an increased production of skin cells. In psoriasis this process only lasts from three to seven days, this results in a build-up of skin cells and this creates the patches.
It is thought that this process is related to problems with the immune system, the immune system would usually defend the body against disease and infection. However in psoriasis the immune system attacks healthy skin cells by mistake.
Psoriasis can start, or become worse because of a certain event, such as injury to your skin, throat infections and using certain medication. Psoriasis can run in families; however the role that genetics plays in causing the condition is unclear.
