Ingrown hairs are hairs that have curled round and grown back into the skin, rather than growing upwards from the hair follicle. Ingrown hairs can become inflamed and produce raised red spots, which can sometimes become infected and itchy.
Anyone can get ingrown hairs however they tend to be more problematic for people with curly or course hair. Ingrown hairs are most frequent in places that have been shaved or waxed, such as the bikini line for women and in the beard for men.
What causes ingrown hairs?
Ingrown hairs can form if the hair follicle becomes clogged with dead skin cells. The clogged follicle forces the hair to grow sideways which is most likely to happen if you already have curly or coarse hair or if you have recently shaved.
In order to prevent ingrown hairs you should allow hair to grow freely without shaving it. Depilatory cream and laser hair removal are less likely to result in ingrown hairs.
Treatment for ingrown hairs.
Laser hair removal can be used as a highly effective solution for painful ingrown hairs, whilst having frequent sessions of laser hair removal you will be at less risk of getting ingrown hairs.
